Castle Eaton

A small Wiltshire village located between Swindon and Cirencester, Castle Eaton is home to the Red Lion, reputed to be the first pub on the River Thames.

Quiet for most of the year, the summer months see an increase in activity as the Royal International Air Tattoo takes place at nearby RAF Fairford in July.

Occasionally walkers can be seen making their way along the Thames Path that winds between the nearby towns of Cricklade and Lechlade.

Thames Path

The Thames Path passes through Castle Eaton as it runs from its source at Thames Head near Kemble through to its eventual conclusion at the Thames Barrier in London.  Opened in 1996 and approximately 184 miles long, the Thames Path is part of the National Trails network.  From its office near Oxford, National Trails is responsible for managing and maintaining the path with the help of volunteers.

Sections 61 and 62

National Trails separates the Thames Path into individually numbered sections for management purposes. The path starts in London with Section 1 and finishes at the river's source in Gloucestershire with Section 64.  Castle Eaton marks the boundary of two sections:

  • Section 61 - Hannington to Castle Eaton
  • Section 62 - Castle Eaton to Cricklade

Flooding

Sections 61 and 62 of the Thames Path - as well as large areas of adjacent land - are prone to flooding. Although this is more likely to occur during winter months it may also be experienced at other times when there has been heavy rainfall in the area.  At such times, the flooding will render parts of these sections impassable.  The picture above shows Section 62 of the path totally submerged as it leaves Castle Eaton for Cricklade
